Individuals exist in this world that believe that “a woman’s home”
means pink walls, frilly sofa covers and floral wallpaper.
Fortunately for home décor everywhere our tastes as women
have become much more refined than that of our 70 year old
grandmothers. Yes, while slipcovers and polyester were once all
the rage, these passé home-decorating tips have been replaced by
continuity, organization and the minimal use of pink and floral.
Here are a few tips to keep any woman’s home fabulous.
Brave use of colour
The simplest way to distinguish a woman’s
home from that of a man is the incorporation of
accents. A pillow here, some greenery there and
some wall décor go a long way to personalizing
your home. To avoid over doing it and making
your home look more like Pee-Wee’s Playhouse
than that of a sophisticated woman, remember
that less is always more.
This season’s homes are all about bold dark
colours. To integrate these into your home try
starting with some raspberry hued pillows against
a neutral or chocolate brown sofa, or paint walls
a less intrusive off-white that includes a hint of
raspberry. If you aren’t so keen on this season’s
choices pay attention to the colours entering your
closet. Home décor almost always follows the
world of fashion.
Friendly Faces
Another telltale sign of a woman’s home is
the photographs that inhabit it. To take these
decorations from dorm room to sophisticate chic
try a wall collage of matching frames in varying
sizes. Try to form some type of order while still
maintaining an air of the erratic. One way to
go could be a blown up photo in the center as a
starting point and then the scattering of frames of
varying sizes surrounding it.
If a subtle air of elegance is more your style
than try getting your favourite poster matted
or blowing up your favourite photo in black in
white or sepia, matting it with a black frame
and placing it against a wall to act as the room’s
focal point. Surrounding yourself with the happy
memories of family and friends is a great way to
add warmth into an otherwise cool space.
The Centre of Attention
Another way to decorate the home with a
woman’s touch is to choose a statement item as
the room’s focal point. An antique table, a unique
lamp or even an ornate rug can act change the
look and feel of an entire room. Try scouring
antique and flea markets or looking online. The
key to filling your home with your feminine touch
could be just a small discovery away.
