Even a rainy day is a good one when it comes to fashion in New York City. Hid-ing under mostly black umbrellas were thousands of Manhattan residents rushing to work, grabbing their morning dose of caffeine, and fighting the rain in high-waist skirts, sleeveless, silk blouses, and four inch pumps.

On 7th Avenue, a major street inManhattan which cuts through landmarks such as Time Square, the Garment District, Financial District and TriBeCa (Triangle Bellow CanalStreet), it wasn’t difficult to separate tourists from residents. While tourists covered themselves with comfortable flip flops, jeans, t-shirts and cargo shorts, much similar to what’s seen amongst Torontonians, the few residents that were visible at the 7th Ave. and W 37th St. intersection stood out with their designer bags and day dresses.

Each neighbourhood had its own flare. While some areas, such as Upper East Side, are dedicated to the city’s most wealthy and luxurious like seen on the hit show Gossip Girl, other areas such as Chinatown, are covered with sidewalk sales, cockroaches and a smell that’ll burn your nostrils.

Starting from New York PennsylvaniaHotel directly across Madison Square Garden at 7th Ave. and W 33rd St., I walked north on 7th Ave. where many square shouldered\professionals carried their briefcases to nearby offices, especially surrounding Times Square. Besides being the financial capital of the world,New York is also the journalism capital of the world. Within the small square are the Ernest and Young building, the Conde Nast building which holds the infamous American Vogue office seen in the September Issue, and Glamour, Elle, Allure, Marie Claire Magazine offices. You can also find the CNN, ESPN, TimeMagazine, New Yorker, and Reuters news wire offices within the vicinity. Bryant Park, where theMercedes Benz Fashion Week is held biannually is a block away from this magazine flooded area at W 42nd St. between 6th and 7th Avenues.

Arriving in style in this city means having your driver pull over a black windowed limousine in front of your office. On certain streets where you would expect to see mostly yellow cars honking at traffic were executive vehicles painting the roads black.

Besides Times Square, the Empire State build-ing, Rockefeller Center, Grand Central Terminal, andChrysler building are also located in Midtown. New York 3 Public Library, as shown in the film The Day After Tomorrow, is home to thousands of leather bound originals and can be found on Fifth Ave. andW 42nd St. next to both high-end and affordable boutiques. The crowd around this area is professionals of all ages, mostly in suits, working at nearby offices. New York fashionistas haven’t been spotted yet.

Continuing north on Fifth Ave.brought me to the south-end of Central Park, and stores such as Saks, Gucci, Ferragamo, Bergdorf Good-man, and Escada, where it was clearI had entered the Upper East Side. The next streets,Madison Avenue and Lexington Avenue, stretch the east side with a collection of shopping strips where you can find Bloomingdales, Marc Jacobs, Barney’s New York, Celine, Chloe, Givenchy, Yves Saint-Laurent, Valentino and others. The mood from one block to the next changed quickly as the crowd went from dressing in suits to putting fashion before function in six inch heels, Chanel bags and silk dresses. Not a single pair of jeans could be spotted amongst the pedestrians in this area.

Before falling too madly in love, I decided to make my to the west end of the city and see what’s trendy at the city’s Theatre District and Upper West Side. The march of well-dressed pedestrians continued as couples and families left theatres and dined at some of the city’s finest restaurants. What doesn’t this cityhave? It has the best fashion, the best restaurants, the most wealthy and successful individuals, world famous landmarks, a massive park, the best theatreproductions- everything.

Everything can truly change within a block inManhattan. The crowd went from young professionals to middle and lower class individuals just south of theTheatre District in Chelsea. Nearby south was SoHo(South of Houston Street) and TriBeCa , home to young, trendy artists and ironically expensive boutiques. Residents wore Bohemian inspired outfits all much too similar to each other. Flowing, colourful day dresses with floral prints paired with brown strappy sandals, fedorase “Manhattan is full of glamour, there’s no doubt about that”and hair braids was the repeated look worn by almost every girl as they entereda Starbucks with a line-up of about 20people and the infamous Top shop store.

A strident hype surrounds Top shop (located in SoHo on Broadway close to Broome Street) as being the ultimate hip store for NewYork hipsters. When I entered the store, expect-ing to be dazzled by Alexander Wang inspired pieces, I was hit with a nice slap of disappointment. The store was no better than main-stream-hit Urban Out-fitters. Looking through the four floors of cloth-ing, I felt like I was l see-ing the same things over and over again in different colours-lace, lace, and lace.

Dissatisfied, I continued south to TriBeCa where the apartments were dirty, but the only one’s affordable. The traffic had quieted down and so had the number of pedestrians. Similar to SoHo, the street style was casual and vintage enthused. One thing was made clear; New York women don’t like pants. From Midtown to TriBeCa, I hadn’t spotted any women in pants. The population was generally about three sizes thinner than the population in Toronto, which comes expected with the more fashion conscious lifestyle amongst residents.

Hitting the Financial District and the notorious Wall Street, the old stone, four storey buildings previously seen in TriBeCa turned into all-glass, modern condos, clean offices and government buildings such as the Stock Exchange. Tiffany’s and top English menswear store Thomas Pink were found on Wall Street for the successful business types in the area. Typically, you’ll find women in either grey or black dresses or pencil skirts with pointed-toe pumps and conservative hair styles. Men are in navy, grey and black suits with white or blue collared shirts, cuff links and striped ties usually with blackberries in hand or against ears negotiating business with clients.

The population is more brand-minded, more accessorized, only in skirts and dresses (not even shorts), and more influenced by the dozens of magazine offices and its world renowned fashion week. Walking through the Upper East Side is almost like seeing photos on The Sartorialist live. Besides street style galore, by being surrounded by so many successful individuals, New York City is a great place for inspiration as it can often make you build a dream for yourself. Like Alexander McQueen’s innovative collections, New York City’s style can never be copied.

Recently Fashion Weekly was invited to view an exhibit at the Bloor Street Chanel Boutique. Arriving at the crisp store we were guided to the upstairs foyer where displayed infront of us was every step of how the classic Chanel Handbag comes to life. Viewing the inner linings of the bag and learning about the love and care that goes behind the making of each one of these historic handbags was not only breathtaking and heart touching. The stories involved a sense of sophistication and grace that was meant to be portrayed by Madame Coco Chanel herself. It was fascinating to see every step of the process and the price matched the quality and dedication that goes into each bag. Fashion may not always be accepted as art but the process behind making one of these fashion pieces was truly an art at many levels!

With spring giving us a sneak preview of the warm weather we’ll receive this summer, its no wonder the excitement is …

By: Ashley Greene, FW Writer

With spring giving us a sneak preview of the warm weather we’ll receive this summer, its no wonder the excitement is starting to build for this years’ summer fashion. From bright and bold colors to floral patterns, it isn’t too hard to imagine how much brighter this summer’s fashion will be. At Fashion Weekly, we’ve come up with the top summer fashion trends to suit every personal style.

Nautical

Tapping into the nautical style of the pier, this trend uses horizontal stripes, navy and white color combinations and golden and silver accents such as buttons or threaded details.

Military

Military is all about the wearing shades of dark green, desert hues and camouflage patterns. This trend emphasizes tailored pieces and structured linings. Stella McCartney is just one of the many designers to combine the tough
patterns of military with a feminine touch.

Denim

Denim is a stylish and easy look to accomplish this summer. Whether ripped or tattered, light or dark, blue jeans have returned as an easy fashionable statement to follow. Basic denim pieces to have this summer are denim boyfriend shorts and the classic, yet, chic denim jacket.

Floral

This romantic, flirty and fun trend shows up in almost every spring/summer 2010-fashion show. It takes a piece of the beautiful garden scenery as inspiration. Ralph Lauren’s spring 2010 ready-to-wear collection is one example of a designer who uses floral patterns.

Although summer weather can be extremely hot, our Canadian summers are known to change from sunny to cool instantly. Here are a two winter items that can be mixed with your new summer wardrobe.

The Boyfriend Blazer

A blazer is the perfect topper for any outfit. Pair with a flowing summer dress or jean shorts for a sophisticated and preppy look.

Jeans
Every woman owns a pair of jeans they feel and look amazing in. With denim making a comeback this summer, it isn’t too hard to take advantage of this trend. Try to use your jeans from last winter and pair with a casual summer white button up blouse.
Trying each and every summer fashion can be tempting but there are some DO’s and DON’T’s to summer fashion.
Do
- Wear bold colors; don’t be afraid to wear reds, greens or blues as long as it is
coordinated against a like or neutral color.
- Mix patterns! This summer is all about fusing different patterns in one outfit.
- Accessorize! There is a lot to choose from this summer and accessories are a perfect way to finish your desired look.
Don’t
- Don’t go overboard on a trend. Dressing in denim doesn’t mean from head to toe. Use one to two signature pieces and incorporate basic staples such as the plain white t-shirt or khaki shorts.
- Don’t wear a style that you don’t feel comfortable in. You know your body better than anyone else. If you don’t feel comfortable wearing a short floral skirt, opt for a style with the same appeal.

Whether you’re a Mary-Kate fan or an Ashley lover, it’s hard to deny that these trendy twins have made a huge impact on the fashion world and show no signs of stopping. The Olsen twins were voted Style Icons of 2010 at the Elle Style Awards in February, where Ashley wore a vintage Christian Lacroix gown with Fendi platforms while Mary-Kate wore a black Lanvin dress with Bulgari jewellery and a Proenza Schouler clutch. The sisters coordinated their looks with flowing tulle trains to complement their dresses.
From the “boho-chic” look that was popularized by the Olsen twins years ago to their constantly evolving unique looks today, Mary-Kate and Ashley are always one step ahead of everyone when it comes to trends. So it is no wonder that they were snagged as the faces of Badgley Mischka in 2006 and started their own fashion lines “The Row” and “Elizabeth and James,”both of which are hugely successful among fans, critics, and celebrities alike.

In the Fall of 2008, Mary-Kate and Ashley released “Influence”, a coffee table book which features “the most interesting, challenging, creative people we know — the ones who helped pave the way for us and our generation”, said Ashley in an interview. The book features photographs and interviews with world-renowned designers such as Karl Lagerfeld and Diane von Furstenburg.
While they may often be criticized by PETA for wearing fur and by critics for not washing their hair, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have created an unquestionable mark in the fashion world. Having come a long way from their days of matching outfits on the red carpet, the Olsen twins (along with fashion powerhouses Alexander Wang and Jason Wu) were inducted into the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) last year, only solidifying their status as international trendsetters and talented designers.

A display of structured shapes that emphasized the body, boasting details such as shoulder pads and beaded cap sleeves. Pink Tartan’s quality and tailoring was impeccable and the subtle colour palette was very classy and wearable. The gold dusty ruffle dress that graced the beautiful models with their side braids stole the show. – S.K

COCCOLILY

Delicate lace, soft colours and a feminine twist for the modern day woman is what the fall 2010 collection by Naana Tennachie Yankey is all about. The Montreal
designer amazed the audience with her chic and playful collection, Coccolily, which is reminiscent of classic 1800’s sophistication. Yankey’s collection reinvents eveningwear by adding ruffles, elaborate shoulder pads and peek-a-boo lace cutouts. The collection also nicely uses accessories such as detailed mesh tights, miniature silk bows and bold statement jewelry to reinforce her collection as a bold choice this fall. – A.G

LUCIAN MATIS

Once again Lucian Matis
tastefully pushes the boundaries of fashion with his new fall 2010 collection, showing us that you can be fashionable even during the cool season. While playing contemporary Parisian music to set the mood, the Toronto fashion designers’ clothing focuses on intricate details such as embroidery, mesh and silhouettes. The material of the clothing ranges from satin to lace and colors ranging from golden yellow to silver metallic. His collection offers a unique style to fall fashion, turning the basic fall staples, such as the high-waist skirt and the evening dress, with charming classic renaissance details. – A.G

JOE FRESH

Fur baby fur. Sensuous soft fur, beautiful matte and shiny sequins made the winter feel not so horrid but rather exciting. Joseph Mimran knows his customer and with such appealing prices, this collection had some great signature everyone. There were flattering silhouettes a-plenty, but seeing plus size model, Crystal Renn, strut the runway was the highlight.
– S.K

BRANDON DWYER

The show began with Brandon’s 2-minute introduction starring model and friend, Andi Muse, revealing the essence of his Fall 2010 collection- sexy fierce and mysterious. Andi Muse was the first to walk the steps, fiercely rocking the runway with a black fur dress style coat. It was the perfect way to introduce the rest of the fitted, simple silhouettes with detailed patterns, mixing black with purple shades and mint greens with light greys. Dwyer’s Fall 2010 collection acknowledges the beauty and mystique a woman possesses and proved to be a fine collection for this upcoming fall. – Natasha.

SANIYA KHAN

In an interesting turn of events following the Orange show, Saniya Khan debuted her Fall 2010 collection and unfortunately did not impress. A 4pm show time was to blame for the half-empty room of spectators, but the same could not be said for the lackluster collection. Using an array of fabrics that appeared to be thrown together at the last minute, the collection – which was seemingly meant to be exotic and earthy – came off as rushed and sloppily executed. – S.M.

ZORAN DOBRIC

On the second day of LG Fashion Week, Toronto based designer Zoran Dobric presented a stunning collection of romantic looks mixed with structured pieces for a look that blurred the line between masculine and feminine. Using neutrals such as black, beige, and gold, and combining them with bold colours, the collection was dramatic yet elegant. Featuring digitally printed silk dresses and fitted blazers, the models walked down the runway in wearable pieces of art. The romantic, knee-length dresses were all cinched at the waist, creating a feminine balance to the structured jackets and bold, retro-inspired hairstyles. – S.M.

GAUDET

Partners Norm and Gio Gaudet are the creative forces behind Gaudet, who opened LG Fashion Week on March 29th after an inspirational introduction by Robin Kay, President of the FDCC. The show opened with a traditional Georgian dance tribute to Nodar Kumaritashvili, the luger who died in a tragic crash at the Vancouver Olympic Games. The models wore a gold mask over their eyes, while their hair was thrown up into a chic messy ponytail. The collection was full of deep, tribal colours and fabrics, such as red, brown, and orange wool. The standout was undoubtedly a 100% Merino wool red dress with chiffon ruffles. – S.M.

ORANGE

Having barely been around for three years, Angela Chen’s “Contrast” for Orange line debuted at LG Fashion Week for the first time and by far exceeded all expectations. Mixing structured, minimalist mini-dresses with flowing sweaters and coats – all in black, white, navy, and grey – Orange is effortlessly chic and flawlessly put-together. Every outfit is easily wearable and enviably stylish. Celebrities such as Chloe Sevigny and Kirsten Dunst, as well as supermodels Coco Rocha and Daria Werbowy all love the brand, ensuring that it will be around for LG Fashion Week season after season. The white silk organza dress worn underneath a black hand knit over-sized cape is the perfect look to recreate for a contrasting look. S.M.

ANDY THE-ANH

Often celebrated as one of the most anticipated shows of the year, Andy The-Anh delivered yet another successful collection, filled with the drama and exquisite craftsmanship that his name is often synonymous with. With a rich colour palette and tailoring almost too good to be true, The-Anh did not disappoint his loyal fans – who offered a standing ovation, applauding his vision of the upcoming season. Overheard in the crowd: “any girl would be lucky to wear one of his dresses,” and I couldn’t agree more. – L.M

RUDSAK

Montreal designer Evic Asatoorian showcased the Aviator collection at Fashion Week. The overall theme was “flying high” with attitude and style. There were a multitude of coats, footwear, gloves, scarves and handbags. The colour palette was mostly blacks, with a couple maroon or grey options. Fur, gun-metal zippers and were mostly used for the detailing along with removable cuffs for the outerwear. The fly high theme really took off with modern twists. – M.B

BUSTLE

Designers Shawn Hewson and Ruth Promislow who started the clothing line Bustle, closed the show at Toronto’s Fall 2010 LG Fashion Week. The designers seem to come up with a new print each season for their collection and this season was a look of “wallpaper at a luxury lounge.” This print was shown inside some coats and on the back of vests. The collection included a fair amount of velvet in full suits embellished with antique inspired buttons on the cuffs. Velvet was also seen in pants mixed with other basics. The women’s pieces were menswear-inspired as well but a little more risqué, with open blazers and vests with
nothing underneath. – K.S.

COMRAGS

The ladies of Comrags presented a subdued Fall collection, complete with slouchy tunics, well-fit dresses, cozy knits and a dark colour palette, drawing from shades found in the forest. Staying true to their simplistic style, designers Judy Cornish and Joyce Gunhouse offered pieces perfect for when the weather begins to cool. The collection embodied a slight earthiness, organic and raw in its execution – think: pretty nymph with a bit of a modern-day edge. – L.M36

I met Henry in a punk squat in Paris and he invited me to his birthday party. And I turned up to his birthday party and didn’t know who he was and I’m like ’this is such an amazing party.’ when I got there I had friends from London and I’m going ‘He’s so nice’ and they were like ‘You know he designs for Dior.’ And I’m like ‘Really! That’s great.
At just 16 years old, she moved to London, working in a fast-foodrestaurant during the day and a bar at night but admits: “It didn’t quite work.”
She was then spotted while shopping with fashion designer Henry Holland. “I got spotted in
London on the street. Me and Henry were on Kentish Town Road. And I got approached so I was like, why not and then when I started doing it, I loved it so much! I thought this is what I really want to do. I really want to concentrate on doing this really well.”
In 2007, she was featured on the cover of Vogue USA, followed by almost every other international publication.
Deyn has appeared in advertisements for Anna Sui, Blugirl by Blumarine, Burberry, Cacharel, Gianfranco Ferré, Moussy, Maison Gilfy, Shiseido, Giorgio Armani, Mulberry, Paul Smith, Reebok and Vivienne Westwood. After Kate Moss she is the new face of Burberry, Jean-Paul Gauthier’s Madame Fragrance, Shiseido and friend Henry Holland’s Label House of Holland.

In 2008, ID magazine devoted the May issue to her. With articles written by her and about her. Deyn was then the guest editor, conducting interviews with big fashion personality such as Vivienne Westwood. In 2009 it was reported that Deyn quit modeling to concentrate on an acting career. She was voted one of the top 30 top model of the 2000’s by Vogue Paris.

Agyness Deyn isn’t just a super model, she is a super woman (even when she fell down the runway TWICE during Naomi Campbell Fashion for the Haiti Relief Benefit Show, she did it with grace (see on your right), who sings, acts, and has become the fashion Icon. She has brought back a very edgy rock’n’roll style. But Deyn isn’t going to stop inspiring us. When asked if she was thinking of maybe becoming a designer herself she said: “I love clothes. I love like buying vintage stuff… putting stuff together. Maybe down the line I’d love to do some designing or styling. But yes there’s going to be projects in the future with me and Henry coming up.”
I, for one, can’t wait to see that happening…

The Academy can judge the films; we’ll take it from here for the best and worst looks from the 82nd annual Academy Awards.

BEST DRESSED

Demi Moore

In this blush Atelier Versace gown, Demi Moore is one of the best dressed at the
Oscars. The tiered skirt, rose detail and
neutral color all work together cohesively without being too over the top.

Sandra Bullock

This Marchesa dress was radiant and
shimmering which makes for a perfect red carpet showstopper. The beaded bodice is our favourite part of Sandra’s look.

Anna Kendrick

Feminine, sophisticated and sexy all married into one dress. Anna Kendrick’s choice to wear Elie Saab was definitely a smart one, as she looked beautiful! Her Sergio Rossi heels and Chantilly lace on the thigh high slit make this dress so lust worthy.

Meryl Streep

At 60 years old, Meryl Streep shows all the new comers how it’s done, and that she’s still got it! The white gown from Chris March looks divine when paired with the Jimmy Choos, completing Meryl’s look.

Cameron Diaz

A very different look for Ms. Diaz at the 2010 Oscars. The champagne Oscar de la Renta gown is very Old Hollywood. Cameron Diaz completes it with a ruby red lip to complete the look.

WORST DRESSED

Jennifer Lopez

The Armani Prive dress showed off J Lo’s curves but her overall look was disappointing. Some critics said the dress looked like bubble wrap but we don’t think that was the biggest problem. What failed here was Jennifer Lopez’s messy hair that does not match her elegant gown.

Zoe Saldana

From the waist up, this Givenchy gown is beautiful but the cha-cha bottom destroys the look. A dress with less volume in the same light purple hue would have been a better choice for Zoe Saldana.

Charlize Theron

The two tone Christian Dior dress shows off Charlize Theron’s beautiful silhouette but the light pink swirling details on the bodice stick out like a sore thumb.

Sarah J. Parker

The Sex in the City star must have left all her fashion knowledge at home before picking this Chanel for the red carpet. The couture dress looked more like a nightgown than a red carpet outfit.

Vera Farmiga

The cascade of ruffles on this Marchesa dress are overbearing. Although the color is beautiful and rich, our eyes can’t get past the layers and layers of ruffles!

Following the example set by Andy Warhol and Edie Sedgwick in the sixties, you are not a proper designer unless you have your very own muse.
The role of the muse originated from a sisterhood of Greek goddesses who inspired the creative process. These days, muses come in the form of Agyness Dean to Henry Holland, or Sienna Miller to Matthew Williamson. Ironically enough- Sienna played original muse Edie Sedgwick in the film Factory Girl! Muses are not necessarily the most beautiful girls around but they do, however, possess the ability to look stylish at all times.
One muse, Isabella Blow, turned the table on this trend – finding the talent instead of them finding her. The late stylist served as a muse to both hat designer Philip Treacy and the now late Alexander McQueen. Proving her support to him, she bought McQueen’s entire school collection for £5,000 and even took Treacy into her home after discovering him.
Designers will not always stick with a muse forever – just look at Matthew Williamson. His original inspiration was Kate Moss, but she was soon ditched in favour of rock royalty Jade Jagger. He then swapped her for stylish Bay Garnett before switching to singer Kelis.
Williamson seemed to be settled on Sienna Miller as his muse but he has apparently dumped her for model Astrid Munoz.
It works both ways though and muses can also switch allegiances.
Lady Amanda Harlech famously ended her 12 years of inspiring John Galliano in favour of Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel. Apparently when Galliano left Givenchy for Dior the label could not match the perks offered by Chanel.

Eleven years on those perks included a permanent suite at the Paris Ritz, which Lady Harlech uses to store her couture clothes.
As well as inspiring designers, muses can also be used to make the clothes look good. Late designer Halston had an entourage, “Halstonettes,” famously leggy women such as Elsa Peretti and Liza Minnelli who would accompany him to the legendary club Studio 54.
Some designers like to keep it in the family when it comes to muses, such as Gianni Versace and his sister Donatella, or Christopher Kane and his sister Tammy. Others use writers or editors, no doubt wanting a career boost. Stephen Jones looks to fashion writer Anna Piaggi for inspiration but it is Tom Ford who no doubt has the muse to end all muses. The former Gucci creative director muse is none other that French vogue editor Carine Roitfeld.
In our opinion, being a muse and getting paid in designer clothes and hotel suites for nothing more than inspiring someone sounds like a dream come true. Maybe its time to look into whether Karl is in the market for a new one!

Calliope, Greek muse of Epic Poetry
