Located in Toronto’s trendy shopping district of Queen West, Seraphic is a boutique for all fashion lovers who want the latest styles without breaking the bank. You can shop for yourself, your daughter, your mother and even your boyfriend. Trust us when we say, everyone will find plenty to love. Check out this new boutique at 555 Queen West. FW sat down with Anjali Mahtani, to get the scoop on the new spot!

1.Can you give us a brief introduction about yourself?

I graduated with a business degree and subsequently pursued my CA designation. I continue to work in the corporate sector; however, my love for fashion has always been a driving force in my career. Seraphic is a family owned business, however, I have come on board to help with the purchasing and marketing.

2.How did the idea of Seraphic manifest? What was your “A-ha!” moment?

My family is in the clothing industry and as a result it was just a matter of time before I came on board to help. I have always had a love for clothes and fashion (like every girl I’m sure!), and felt it was finally time to pursue my goal. I feel that stylish fashion should be affordable and should be in everyone’s grasp. I have always been a bargain hunter, scouring the markets in Asia and designing and having clothes made in India. I realized that there was a lack of stylish, affordable and unique clothing in the Toronto market that would appeal to every age group.

3.Can you virtually walk us through Seraphic? What would we see?

Seraphic carries several recognizable Canadian brands, including Guido & Mary, Foxy Jeans, Kensie, C’est Moi, Alix K, Marco Donateli, Triple 5 Soul, just to name a few. We also carry several brands from the US and from the UK (Lipsy UK). We offer unique clothing that appeals to the majority of age groups (a shopping experience for the entire family). We find it very important to ensure that each piece in the store has a signature style and interesting touch.

4.What is the price point?

Seraphic sells affordable clothing. Our prices range from $30 dollars for T-shirts and leggings to $150 for formal dresses. We wanted to cater to the general public, however still maintain the trendy Queen Street vibe and style.

5.How are the brands picked to be in Seraphic? Is there a variety?

The brands and styles picked for Seraphic are based on how unique the brand is and the price point. Seraphic aims to carry brands that are of good quality, however affordable for the majority of shoppers. We carry several brands in the store and pick items based on what we feel would be appealing to shoppers and would make our store stand out from the rest.

6.Who is your favourite designer at Seraphic?

Unfortunately it would be difficult for me to choose one designer who I prefer. I feel that each designer and label we carry has a different appeal. For example, Lipsy UK makes fantastic price point formal dresses, while C’est Moi offers contemporary clothing for day to day living. In addition, the Collective Concept pieces we carry appeal to both a mature clientele, while still maintaining a trendy look. In addition, on the men’s side, Marco Donateli makes great men’s dress shirts and suits, while our Triple 5 Soul, gives the guys a more
casual look.

Product Reviews

Nutmeg and Vanilla lip balm

The Body Shop’s Nutmeg and Vanilla lip balm will keep your lips soft and shimmering. The nutmeg makes it a little spicy but not too over the top, and the vanilla compliments the sweet cinnamon-nutmeg flavor. The sweet lip balm warms your lips, and leaves it moisturized and delicate. The adorable tin packaging also makes it easy to access and pop off. If you need a little shine on your lips, this is definitely the right lip balm! – Amiee Wu

Stay Matte Clarifying Foundation

The new line of products from Rimmel features Stay Matte Clarifying Foundation, a foundation designed to keep skin matte and smooth for 12 hours all while clearing it with their “skin complex” formula. The foundation is fragrance-free, and includes soothing ingredients such as cucumber extract and skin clearing salicylic acid. Having sensitive skin myself, I knew this was right down my alley. The foundation blends flawlessly with the skin and really does keep your face matte, almost like there is no product on it at all. Coverage wise, there could be more in terms of evening out redness and blemishes, however, wearing it under a powder concealer or mineral powder creates a long lasting finish. The product itself comes in a convenient slim tube, perfect for throwing in your purse or even a clutch.
Whether you are looking for a light coverage foundation, which is kind toyour skin, or a product to help keep your face looking fresh all day, Rimmel Stay Matte Foundation is a smart buy. – Sara Ghadaki

Hope in a Tube High-Density Eye and Lip Firming Cream

Philosophy’s Hope in a Tube High-Density Eye and Lip Firming Cream is more than hope in a tube; it is a necessity for any woman who wants to enhance her skin appearance around the eyes and lips, while reducing lines and wrinkles. I love the simple design of the tube. The cream dispenses out of a shapely slender tube, ensuring the right amount is applied to skin. The smell of the product is soft, yet still has a fresh aroma.
This product is perfect for my sensitive skin because of the smooth and thick texture, which moisturizes my skin instantly when I apply it with my fingertips. An extra-added bonus of Philosophy’s eye and lip cream is the improved appearance of my skin, which I noticed only after a few uses. Along with diminishing eye lines, the cream restores skin lines around the dark circles of tired eyes. It provided my lips with outer moisturizing around the mouth, making my skin feel smooth and soft. The silky cream made my eyes and lips feel rejuvenated while gently firming and tightening my skin. – Ashley Greene

Honey and Ylang Ylang Body Cream

This fragrant cream from the Rocky Mountain Soap Company is ideal for those with dry skin. Body Cream with honey and ylang ylang is best used after a shower or bath. The results are dramatically better when used after washing compared to use on dry skin where the cream required constant rubbing into the skin. Natural ingredients such as grapefruit seed and lavender leave a soft and citrus smell long after application. – Vanessa Manno

Sparkle Roller Ball

The Sparkle Roller Ball from The Body Shop is a great addition to any outfit for a night on the town! Roll it on top of your eye-shadow for a dramatic look or on your arms for an extra touch of shimmer that lasts all night. While not entirely suitable for the workplace or a casual dinner, this product is great when you want to add drama and lots of shine to your look. Blending into the crowd is not an option when you roll on the sparkles since you’re sure to be the center of attention with the Sparkle Roller Ball! After a long, hard week, we all deserve a chance to sparkle
and shine. – Souzan Michael

lavigne organic skincare has a cute an useful products that can be checked out at www.lavigneorganics.com. FW tested out their Botanical Cleanser-it felt clean, soft and fresh and even took off make up. This is a great natural product to try out.

Lavigne Organic Skincare

The Body Shop’s Define and Sparkle Eye Liner is a dual ended stick loaded with goodies. On one end, there is a liquid liner with subtle shimmer. Unlike many of the liquid liners on the shelves these days, this one actually stays on all day. The brush applicator is perfect for control application. On the opposite is topcoat mascara with lots of sparkle. This should not be worn during the day, as it may be too much of a look, but it’s perfect for transitioning your day look to your party look. – Medge Beauvoir

Hot New Products to Check Out!

Compiled by Sakina Khawaja and the FW Staff

The FW staff has taken a personal interest in some of the products featured – read on to see what we thought!

Ojon Hair: Restorative Hair treatment
is a great product out there to soothe the scalp, help restore and maintain hair growth – just think of it as your personal hair makeover! With ingredients from the rainforest in South America, this treatment provides that natural feel needed when our hair feels dry and dead. Just rub it warm into your palms and spread it all over your hair. The application of oil in hair is an old method used by many cultures around the world but the Ojon Hair product has its own unique qualities that are worthy of a try during the brutal winter months.

Juice Beauty Cleansing Milk and Nutrient Moisturizer

For organic lovers, the typical raw feel of natural products is a bit of a turn off. But Juice Beauty is an excellent example of a product that is organic, natural, good for you and pretty. With its antioxidant raspberry juice, the soap free Juice Beauty
Cleansing Milk and Nutrient Moisturizer have ingredients like white grape and carrots that are great for you, let you feel fresh and replenished day after day.

True Beauty Lies Within.

One of FW’s favourite product lines out there- Philosophy.
They always have something fun and enjoyable to share. Currently, check out their new product True Beauty Lies Within. The Supernatural lit from within is a healthy cream blush that can be applied to the apples of our cheeks for the extra cheery look – just take a dab with your finger tips for cheek bone application- it’s very uplifting- definitely a must try for all skin types.

Rocky Mountain Soap Company

has made a great impression with our FW
staffers. My personal favourite from their extensive
line of hand creams, face creams, eye creams, etc. were the roll on perfumes. It is such a perfect piece to have in a woman’s purse. With aromatic smells like Jasmine and 100% natural ingredients, the roll on is refreshing.

Improper Copper cream colour base

Every female has one product by MAC whatever it may be but if you’re trying to choose, the Improper
Copper cream colour base is an awesome multi-purpose product that will just glide on to your skin maintaining a nice all over sheen.

Eyecon

Benefit is known for its cute packaging, over the top edge to all their products- but one of FW’s all time
favourite items is the Eyecon- what an awesome
innovation! Dark circles – goodbye! Puffy eyes and
dullness – all gone! This is a concealer that has the
power to heal and definitely has become one of our MUST have products all year round.

Gillette Venus Embrace

Gillette’s done some great packaging for their 5-blade Venus razors. The Gillette Venus Embrace provides the closest shave possible, has a great handle, excellent with curves and the Satin Care
Floral Passion or Menthol shaving gels are great to work with. Quick, easy and cut free shaving. Finish up with the In-Shower Moisturizing body wash that will leave the skin feeling smooth and soft.

is featuring three amazing products these days. Firstly the Gosh line they carry is very energetic and fun. The Jumbo Lip Gloss in Gypsy Red has come out and provides that “right off the runways” look. Secondly, the QUO line always has something unique to offer. Currently their Miraculous
Lash mascara is making big news because its unorthodox shades such as aquamarine and coffee bean. Thirdly, the Shops at Don Mills has welcomed their Murale section which is a dermatological skin care, luxury product and personalised
customer service haven. This place has it all from every possible brand out there – a must see!

Everyone loves a smokey eye but not everyone knows how to achieve it. Let’s face it, all of us have ended up with raccoon eyes or just not smokey enough. Well, FW staffers were anxious to try the Cover Girl Smokey Shadow Blast- a two-step easy way to get the look and no hassle – needless to say, we LOVED it!

Olay Professional ProX Anti Aging Starter Protocol

Furthermore, the teaming up of Cover Girl and OLAY for the Simple Ageless Corrector is an awesome innovation to fix those minor flaws without feeling cakey. OLAY’s 7 in 1 Anti Aging Exfoliate and Replenisher – Total Effects is a great product to try in this dry weather as well. Finally for our more sophisticated reader, a regime that keeps you away from surgery or medication is the Olay Professional ProX Anti Aging Starter Protocol. A three step regime to keep you young, fresh and rejuvenated- try it, it works!

Lush Cosmetics products are an excellent natural and organic way of taking care of your skin and using appropriate
products that are specialised. An FW
favourite these days is the LemSlip
Buttercream – looking like an actual brick or slice of butter, it just melts on to your damp skin in the shower. It’s got a citrus scent, which smells great and leaves you feeling fresh. Your skin feels much smoother
and you can feel good about using something that isn’t filled with chemicals

Pacifia Spray Perfumes

Pacifia Spray Perfumes, which can be found at Sephora, Whole Food Markets and various
retailers and spas nation-wide, is the perfect new innovation in the “au naturelle”
department. With its Middle Eastern themed packaging and eastern scents- its aroma fills the air with mystery and sensuousness as you walk by. An FW fave these days is the Mediterranean Fig transporting us to a world of culture and tradition – a great gift, a keepsake in your purse pocket or an excellent conversation piece on your dressing table – we love it!

By: Sheila Teixeira, FW Contributor
The day my friend, Cynthia, died from
breast cancer, I leaned against the wall outside
her hospital room. I childishly imagined her
skipping down the hallway, Jesus
at her side. It was what Cynthia
believed would happen after he
cured her and showed his glory.

She made the choice not
to have treatment after her
mastectomy, even though she had
lymph nodes involved; she had a
strong faith in divine healing. I
found it difficult to understand
or accept her decision, especially
since she had three small children.
In the end, I was amazed at her
faith in God and respected her
for not allowing breast cancer to
destroy her faith.

Janet, another friend who also knew
Cynthia, was diagnosed in 1995 with Stage 2
breast cancer. She wished she had had Cynthia’s
faith in an external divine force while she went
through cancer treatment. She considers herself
more of a spiritual person than religious. During
her treatment, she didn’t pray, but she did have
faith that she would survive.

Frances, my older sister, was diagnosed
in 1996 with Stage 3 breast cancer and went
through cancer treatment. She also had faith in
herself and didn’t feel she had to go to church -
she prayed at home.

Karen, a young woman, who
was diagnosed at age 36 with
Stage 1 breast cancer, which has
metastized, says it’s important to
have faith in yourself. She feels
this is her life’s journey. If she
prays, it’s to have love in her life.

At the time of diagnosis both
Frances and Janet thought they
were going to die, but they also
knew they would do everything
to survive. They both had
young children and both chose
conventional cancer treatments.
Karen chose alternative treatment after her
double mastectomy. But when her cancer
returned a year later, she turned to conventional
treatment, and meditation -
a complementary treatment. She is now on
chemotherapy and doesn’t believe it is her
time to die.

Frances and Janet didn’t give much thought
to what caused their breast cancer. They didn’t
think it had anything to do with their lifestyle
nor did they think it was hereditary and neither
of them knew that there was cancer in past
generations of their family. They both ate
healthy, they both exercised. Janet was a fitness
instructor, and Frances exercised four times a
week. Recently, they both found out it is genetic.
Karen knew it was genetic. Her mother had died
at a young age from breast cancer and tested
positive for the BRAC 2 gene.

Both Frances and Janet worked while going
through treatment. It was important for them to
be normal. Janet and I taught an aqua-fit class
together, Janet teaching in the deep water and
I in the shallow end. There were times when
Janet would ask me to watch her class for a few
minutes, while she went to throw up then she
would return and continue teaching. Frances
felt as though she had two lives,
one life that continued as if she
didn’t have cancer. She worked
full time, participated in family
events, and was involved with her
daughters’ lives. In her other life,
she was ill and fighting to survive.
Her other life dealt with fear, and
the side affects of radiation and
chemotherapy.

Even though Frances and Janet
had a lot of support from their
doctors, friends, and family, they
felt alone. They drove themselves
to chemotherapy; Janet didn’t
want anyone to go with her. She
didn’t want to have to carry on a
conversation and if she wanted to
cry, she could. They feel, no matter
how much support you have around
you, you battle cancer alone and
most of the time you internalize it.

Neither of them has discussed
their breast cancer with their
children. Janet did speak to her
children but they were too young to
remember. Frances did not want to
interrupt her daughters’ lives. She
has never spoken to them about it.
Do they think about their breast cancer? Karen does not
think of her cancer as good or bad – it’s just
there. Frances and Janet say even though they
think about it less as the years pass, thoughts of
it returning never leave.

But, it hasn’t changed their lives. They
didn’t quit their jobs to do all the things they
want to do in life – that’s for retirement. They
didn’t become more religious. They continue
to work, exercise, and try to eat healthy. Janet
even credits cancer for her decision to leave
her husband. She realized, while going through
treatment that her marriage had ended years
before. She is not calmer, but when little things
annoy her, she thinks how lucky she is to see
her children graduate and become adults. She
also thinks of Cynthia

By: Amanda Bloye, FW Writer
One of the most devastating things a woman
can hear from her doctor is that a lump has been
found in her breast. …

By: Amanda Bloye, FW Writer

One of the most devastating things a woman
can hear from her doctor is that a lump has been
found in her breast. According to the Canadian
Breast Cancer society one in nine women will
develop breast cancer while one in 28 will die from
it. Fortunately there are ways to stay one step
ahead of the disease.

By performing routine breast exams and
getting an annual physical you can be sure to
catch breast cancer early. The earlier the disease
is caught the greater chance there is of survival.
Here are five easy steps, courtesy of www.
breastcancer.org, to performing a proper breast
self-exam.

Step 1
Begin the exam by standing topless in front
of a mirror with your shoulders straight and your
hands on your hips. Things to look for are that
breasts are their usual size, colour and shape,
as well as that no swelling has occurred. If any
changes such as rash, a changed nipple position
or puckering/bulging of skin occur contact your
doctor immediately.

Step 2
After looking for any initial changes in step
one, lift your arms above your head and repeat
step one, continuing to look for any changes or
abnormalities.

Step 3
Still looking in the mirror with your arms up
move your attention toward the nipples. While
examining the area look for signs of fluid coming
out of one or both nipples. If fluid exists it could
be watery, milky, yellow or mixed with blood.

Step 4
Next, lie down flat and feel your breasts
using your right hand to feel the left breast and
the left hand to feel the right breast. Pressing
in a circular motion use a firm, smooth touch,
pressing with the pads of your first three fingers
with no spaces in between them

Follow a pattern that allows you to feel
the entire breast such as moving the fingers up
and down in vertical rows or moving in circles
starting small at the breast and growing as you
move outward. Feel the front and back of your
breast using light pressure just below, medium
pressure for tissue in the middle of the breast
and firm pressure for deep tissue in the back of
the breast (you should feel your ribcage)

Step 5
Finally, feel your breasts while either
standing or sitting. Most women find that the
best time to perform this step is in the shower.
Cover the entire breast using the same motions
as in step four.

Society at www.cancer.ca.

By: Katya Revenko, FW

Personally one of my favourite and perhaps
understated collections of L’Oreal Fashion Week
was Katya Revenko with their amazing use of
hair and make up on the runway. Katya Revenko
did metallics in makeup (a long side the amazing
clothes) better then anyone else I’ve seen thus far.
Very dramatic but not over bearing, metallics can
be a disaster waiting to happen, but this collection
pulled it off magically. Silver eye shadow was the
core of their styling, a long side beautiful long,
tousled locks. I absolutely adore the mix of sheer
on the lips, with charcoals, grey, and silver on the
eyes. A perfect combination of colour that never
gets out of control.

Pink Tartan
Pink Tartan offered the most inspired hair
and make up at L’Oreal Fashion Week. Offering a
homage to vintage (a common theme through out
Pink Tartan’s collections). Though hair was hidden
beneath grey garden themed vintage scarves, and
eyes often covered by bold spectacles, make up was
still a strong focus in their collection. Bold colours
and vibrant fire engine red on the lips, smoky
liquid eyeliner eyes and long eyelashes. Pouty lips,
and wavy locks. A throw back to classic and yet
dramatic screen sirens and femme fatales.
Color your world with luxurious, feather-light Silken Earth powders and sheer,
soothing Natural Lips – beautiful, breathable, soft-focus perfection.
Use code F78W to receive a 15% discount on these
products. Or look for us at better natural product
retailers everywhere. Natural glamour. Healthy glow.
Truly sustainable and agricultural ingredients.

Playdead Cult & Damzels
Playdead Cult & Damzels offered one of the
most fun loving and easy going collections. Wild,
and fierce Playdead’s hair was the obvious stand
out. 80’s high to the top ponytails, electrified
lengths, and curls. Make up was also impressive
with equally fun with pinks and pastels on eyes
and lips. There was nothing quiet about this
collection, and all eyes were on these damzels. A
definite reflection on Blondie and the post-punk
era. It was obviously the main muse to creators
Rory Lindo and Kelly Freeman. Funky, punky,
and over all a stand out in this years fashion week.

Andy The Anh
Andy The Anh portrayed a wonderful
combination of daring and sophisticated hues.
Pinks, reds, and splashes of purple were a grand
part of the makeup scheme in his collection. A
long side bouffant hairstyles, perched at the top
of models heads hair and make up was a mix
of femininity and structure. Anh is known for
his clash of business and pleasure, and this is
definitely a long the same line. The main focus
for me was the use of eye shadow, the pinks and
purples were so visually striking it almost takes
the focus off of the clothes.

BY AMANDA BLOYE, FW Writer

Brenda* lies on the operating table, anxiously
awaiting the lethargy of the anesthetic. She
waits for the soothing calm of the hospital’s
drugs to sweep over her body. As it worked its
way through her bloodstream, she recounted
her reasons for the surgery. She was different
and longed to be regular. Sure she was pretty
but she no longer wanted to be passed over. She
had plenty of reasons to be doing it. Didn’t
she? Well she definitely had two good reasons
and they stared back, mocking her every time
she looked in the mirror. They sat on her chest
looking more like pimples than nipples and slight
bumps instead of breasts. She closed her eyes,
letting her consciousness slip away knowing she
would wake up anew.

As individuals living in a cosmetic nation we
are always searching for the latest quick fix. In
no realm is this truer than that of celebrities -
whether it’s Demi Moore using leeches instead
of Botox or Lindsay Lohan considering Botox
injections to cure non-existent crowsfeet. Sure
there is a desire to be beautiful but it can be said
that celebrities might be taking it too far.

What happens when the agony of surgery
outlasts the healing process? How is an
individual to cope?

For Brenda, these questions became her
reality. After months of contemplating her
operation she decided to take the plunge and get
a breast augmentation. At first all was well. The
surgeon’s work healed beautifully and she felt as
though she had a new lease on life. She was glad
to be getting noticed.

About eight months after the surgery, Brenda
began to notice something strange. Her left
breast had grown almost over night. It was now
significantly larger than the right for reasons
she couldn’t understand. She considered going
back to see the surgeon but thought first to do the
exercises he gave her to reduce the swelling.

Over the next five months, Brenda continued
the exercises with the hope that she would wake
up and her breasts would once again be even. It
never happened. The size difference eventually
became so great that she needed to wear a bra
insert in her right cup. After admitting that
something was wrong Brenda went to see the
surgeon. She never expected what she was about
to find out.

As it turned out Brenda’s body had rejected
the cohesive gel implant. Through no fault of
the surgeon or the type of implant, Brenda’s
body was refusing what her mind and heart so
desperately wanted.

“It wasn’t the surgeon or the implant,”
Brenda told Fashion Weekly. “My body just
didn’t want to handle it. Luckily I was able to go
back and get it fixed.”

Unfortunately, when it comes to any surgery
there is no guarantee. Cases like Brenda’s happen
all of the time and luckily they can usually be
corrected. One celebrity who was faced with the
unfavourable consequences of plastic surgery was
Tara Reid. After consulting a plastic surgeon
in 2004, Reid was surprised to find her breasts
larger than she had imagined.
“[I] asked for big Bs [but instead] he gave me Cs,

and I didn’t want them,” Reid shared in an
interview with US Weekly.

After the surgery Reid noticed that her
nipples were slightly deformed but it wasn’t long
until the botched breast augmentation got much
worse.

“After six months of ‘it’s going to get better,’
it started to get worse and worse. I never thought
I would have nipples that looked like this,” Reid
told the magazine.

Why is it that with cases like Reid’s strewn
across the media, we as a society are becoming
an increasingly plastic nation?

“For me I just wanted a way to feel better
about myself,” Brenda explained. “I was tired of
spending money on push up bras. I was tired of
being embarrassed of my chest when I was with a
man.”

Whether or not cosmetic mishaps can be
avoided is another story altogether but it is
important for individuals considering such
procedures to be aware of what they are up
against. Anyone wanting to get cosmetic surgery
should be aware of the facts, the procedure and
should thoroughly research any surgeon they are
considering.

The search for the perfect nail colour for
most women is equivalent to the search for the
Holy Grail. There are so many colours that most
of us are overwhelmed when standing in front of
a plethora of colours and finishes, trying to pick a
colour that is classic but, also makes a statement
about who we are.

We tend to go with what is safe and what we
know, like pinks and natural colours. Some of us
tend to go for trendy colours like blue, purple or
yellow. But, most women go for the ever classic
French manicure which is always classy and
always in style.

Believe it or not, how we take care of our
nails says a lot about us as people. It shows that
we pay close attention to detail and that we take
pride in who we are down to the very last detail.

Some great trends for nail colour for summer
and fall are medium length rounded nails. You
can not go wrong with pastel pinks, soft coral
shades and beautiful champagnes. You may want
to leave the heavy colours such as black and
darker shades for the winter months, although
really, those hues are almost always chic. Never
fear though because a vibrant red is always in
style. Finding a red nail polish has the same rules
lipstick; you need to know the undertones as
finding that perfect shade of red of your skin
in order to wear that perfect red. Try to find a
colour that is classic like M.A.C’s- Firehouse.

If you are looking for a nail colour that
withstands your day to day grind, some brands
that you can try are Chanel, M.A.C, and OPI. If
you are not willing to spend an arm and a leg on
fabulous finger colour then you can try Rimmel,
Revlon, Maybelline or NYC.

Also, using top coat is an important step that
we often overlook. Top coat leaves the nails
looking shiny and professionally done and helps
the coat last up to a week as long as you apply a
fresh top coat daily.
Happy finger-painting!
