1.Can you give us a brief introduction about yourself?

I graduated with a business degree and subsequently pursued my CA designation. I continue to work in the corporate sector; however, my love for fashion has always been a driving force in my career. Seraphic is a family owned business, however, I have come on board to help with the purchasing and marketing.

2.How did the idea of Seraphic manifest? What was your “A-ha!” moment?

My family is in the clothing industry and as a result it was just a matter of time before I came on board to help. I have always had a love for clothes and fashion (like every girl I’m sure!), and felt it was finally time to pursue my goal. I feel that stylish fashion should be affordable and should be in everyone’s grasp. I have always been a bargain hunter, scouring the markets in Asia and designing and having clothes made in India. I realized that there was a lack of stylish, affordable and unique clothing in the Toronto market that would appeal to every age group.

3.Can you virtually walk us through Seraphic? What would we see?

Seraphic carries several recognizable Canadian brands, including Guido & Mary, Foxy Jeans, Kensie, C’est Moi, Alix K, Marco Donateli, Triple 5 Soul, just to name a few. We also carry several brands from the US and from the UK (Lipsy UK). We offer unique clothing that appeals to the majority of age groups (a shopping experience for the entire family). We find it very important to ensure that each piece in the store has a signature style and interesting touch.

4.What is the price point?

Seraphic sells affordable clothing. Our prices range from $30 dollars for T-shirts and leggings to $150 for formal dresses. We wanted to cater to the general public, however still maintain the trendy Queen Street vibe and style.

5.How are the brands picked to be in Seraphic? Is there a variety?

The brands and styles picked for Seraphic are based on how unique the brand is and the price point. Seraphic aims to carry brands that are of good quality, however affordable for the majority of shoppers. We carry several brands in the store and pick items based on what we feel would be appealing to shoppers and would make our store stand out from the rest.

6.Who is your favourite designer at Seraphic?

Unfortunately it would be difficult for me to choose one designer who I prefer. I feel that each designer and label we carry has a different appeal. For example, Lipsy UK makes fantastic price point formal dresses, while C’est Moi offers contemporary clothing for day to day living. In addition, the Collective Concept pieces we carry appeal to both a mature clientele, while still maintaining a trendy look. In addition, on the men’s side, Marco Donateli makes great men’s dress shirts and suits, while our Triple 5 Soul, gives the guys a more
casual look.

Cover Girl Smokey Shadow Blast

Everyone loves a smokey eye but not everyone knows how to achieve it. Let’s face it, all of us have ended up with raccoon eyes or just not smokey enough. Well, FW staffers were anxious to try the Cover Girl Smokey Shadow Blast- a two-step easy way to get the look and no hassle – needless to say, we LOVED it!

She made the choice not
to have treatment after her
mastectomy, even though she had
lymph nodes involved; she had a
strong faith in divine healing. I
found it difficult to understand
or accept her decision, especially
since she had three small children.
In the end, I was amazed at her
faith in God and respected her
for not allowing breast cancer to
destroy her faith.

Janet, another friend who also knew
Cynthia, was diagnosed in 1995 with Stage 2
breast cancer. She wished she had had Cynthia’s
faith in an external divine force while she went
through cancer treatment. She considers herself
more of a spiritual person than religious. During
her treatment, she didn’t pray, but she did have
faith that she would survive.

Frances, my older sister, was diagnosed
in 1996 with Stage 3 breast cancer and went
through cancer treatment. She also had faith in
herself and didn’t feel she had to go to church -
she prayed at home.

Karen, a young woman, who
was diagnosed at age 36 with
Stage 1 breast cancer, which has
metastized, says it’s important to
have faith in yourself. She feels
this is her life’s journey. If she
prays, it’s to have love in her life.

At the time of diagnosis both
Frances and Janet thought they
were going to die, but they also
knew they would do everything
to survive. They both had
young children and both chose
conventional cancer treatments.
Karen chose alternative treatment after her
double mastectomy. But when her cancer
returned a year later, she turned to conventional
treatment, and meditation -
a complementary treatment. She is now on
chemotherapy and doesn’t believe it is her
time to die.

Frances and Janet didn’t give much thought
to what caused their breast cancer. They didn’t
think it had anything to do with their lifestyle
nor did they think it was hereditary and neither
of them knew that there was cancer in past
generations of their family. They both ate
healthy, they both exercised. Janet was a fitness
instructor, and Frances exercised four times a
week. Recently, they both found out it is genetic.
Karen knew it was genetic. Her mother had died
at a young age from breast cancer and tested
positive for the BRAC 2 gene.

Both Frances and Janet worked while going
through treatment. It was important for them to
be normal. Janet and I taught an aqua-fit class
together, Janet teaching in the deep water and
I in the shallow end. There were times when
Janet would ask me to watch her class for a few
minutes, while she went to throw up then she
would return and continue teaching. Frances
felt as though she had two lives,
one life that continued as if she
didn’t have cancer. She worked
full time, participated in family
events, and was involved with her
daughters’ lives. In her other life,
she was ill and fighting to survive.
Her other life dealt with fear, and
the side affects of radiation and
chemotherapy.

Even though Frances and Janet
had a lot of support from their
doctors, friends, and family, they
felt alone. They drove themselves
to chemotherapy; Janet didn’t
want anyone to go with her. She
didn’t want to have to carry on a
conversation and if she wanted to
cry, she could. They feel, no matter
how much support you have around
you, you battle cancer alone and
most of the time you internalize it.

Neither of them has discussed
their breast cancer with their
children. Janet did speak to her
children but they were too young to
remember. Frances did not want to
interrupt her daughters’ lives. She
has never spoken to them about it.
Do they think about their breast cancer? Karen does not
think of her cancer as good or bad – it’s just
there. Frances and Janet say even though they
think about it less as the years pass, thoughts of
it returning never leave.

But, it hasn’t changed their lives. They
didn’t quit their jobs to do all the things they
want to do in life – that’s for retirement. They
didn’t become more religious. They continue
to work, exercise, and try to eat healthy. Janet
even credits cancer for her decision to leave
her husband. She realized, while going through
treatment that her marriage had ended years
before. She is not calmer, but when little things
annoy her, she thinks how lucky she is to see
her children graduate and become adults. She
also thinks of Cynthia

One of the most devastating things a woman
can hear from her doctor is that a lump has been
found in her breast. According to the Canadian
Breast Cancer society one in nine women will
develop breast cancer while one in 28 will die from
it. Fortunately there are ways to stay one step
ahead of the disease.

By performing routine breast exams and
getting an annual physical you can be sure to
catch breast cancer early. The earlier the disease
is caught the greater chance there is of survival.
Here are five easy steps, courtesy of www.
breastcancer.org, to performing a proper breast
self-exam.

Step 1
Begin the exam by standing topless in front
of a mirror with your shoulders straight and your
hands on your hips. Things to look for are that
breasts are their usual size, colour and shape,
as well as that no swelling has occurred. If any
changes such as rash, a changed nipple position
or puckering/bulging of skin occur contact your
doctor immediately.

Step 2
After looking for any initial changes in step
one, lift your arms above your head and repeat
step one, continuing to look for any changes or
abnormalities.

Step 3
Still looking in the mirror with your arms up
move your attention toward the nipples. While
examining the area look for signs of fluid coming
out of one or both nipples. If fluid exists it could
be watery, milky, yellow or mixed with blood.

Step 4
Next, lie down flat and feel your breasts
using your right hand to feel the left breast and
the left hand to feel the right breast. Pressing
in a circular motion use a firm, smooth touch,
pressing with the pads of your first three fingers
with no spaces in between them

Follow a pattern that allows you to feel
the entire breast such as moving the fingers up
and down in vertical rows or moving in circles
starting small at the breast and growing as you
move outward. Feel the front and back of your
breast using light pressure just below, medium
pressure for tissue in the middle of the breast
and firm pressure for deep tissue in the back of
the breast (you should feel your ribcage)

Step 5
Finally, feel your breasts while either
standing or sitting. Most women find that the
best time to perform this step is in the shower.
Cover the entire breast using the same motions
as in step four.

Personally one of my favourite and perhaps
understated collections of L’Oreal Fashion Week
was Katya Revenko with their amazing use of
hair and make up on the runway. Katya Revenko
did metallics in makeup (a long side the amazing
clothes) better then anyone else I’ve seen thus far.
Very dramatic but not over bearing, metallics can
be a disaster waiting to happen, but this collection
pulled it off magically. Silver eye shadow was the
core of their styling, a long side beautiful long,
tousled locks. I absolutely adore the mix of sheer
on the lips, with charcoals, grey, and silver on the
eyes. A perfect combination of colour that never
gets out of control.

Pink Tartan
Pink Tartan offered the most inspired hair
and make up at L’Oreal Fashion Week. Offering a
homage to vintage (a common theme through out
Pink Tartan’s collections). Though hair was hidden
beneath grey garden themed vintage scarves, and
eyes often covered by bold spectacles, make up was
still a strong focus in their collection. Bold colours
and vibrant fire engine red on the lips, smoky
liquid eyeliner eyes and long eyelashes. Pouty lips,
and wavy locks. A throw back to classic and yet
dramatic screen sirens and femme fatales.

Playdead Cult & Damzels
Playdead Cult & Damzels offered one of the
most fun loving and easy going collections. Wild,
and fierce Playdead’s hair was the obvious stand
out. 80’s high to the top ponytails, electrified
lengths, and curls. Make up was also impressive
with equally fun with pinks and pastels on eyes
and lips. There was nothing quiet about this
collection, and all eyes were on these damzels. A
definite reflection on Blondie and the post-punk
era. It was obviously the main muse to creators
Rory Lindo and Kelly Freeman. Funky, punky,
and over all a stand out in this years fashion week.

Andy The Anh
Andy The Anh portrayed a wonderful
combination of daring and sophisticated hues.
Pinks, reds, and splashes of purple were a grand
part of the makeup scheme in his collection. A
long side bouffant hairstyles, perched at the top
of models heads hair and make up was a mix
of femininity and structure. Anh is known for
his clash of business and pleasure, and this is
definitely a long the same line. The main focus
for me was the use of eye shadow, the pinks and
purples were so visually striking it almost takes
the focus off of the clothes.

Brenda* lies on the operating table, anxiously
awaiting the lethargy of the anesthetic. She
waits for the soothing calm of the hospital’s
drugs to sweep over her body. As it worked its
way through her bloodstream, she recounted
her reasons for the surgery. She was different
and longed to be regular. Sure she was pretty
but she no longer wanted to be passed over. She
had plenty of reasons to be doing it. Didn’t
she? Well she definitely had two good reasons
and they stared back, mocking her every time
she looked in the mirror. They sat on her chest
looking more like pimples than nipples and slight
bumps instead of breasts. She closed her eyes,
letting her consciousness slip away knowing she
would wake up anew.

As individuals living in a cosmetic nation we
are always searching for the latest quick fix. In
no realm is this truer than that of celebrities -
whether it’s Demi Moore using leeches instead
of Botox or Lindsay Lohan considering Botox
injections to cure non-existent crowsfeet. Sure
there is a desire to be beautiful but it can be said
that celebrities might be taking it too far.

What happens when the agony of surgery
outlasts the healing process? How is an
individual to cope?

For Brenda, these questions became her
reality. After months of contemplating her
operation she decided to take the plunge and get
a breast augmentation. At first all was well. The
surgeon’s work healed beautifully and she felt as
though she had a new lease on life. She was glad
to be getting noticed.

About eight months after the surgery, Brenda
began to notice something strange. Her left
breast had grown almost over night. It was now
significantly larger than the right for reasons
she couldn’t understand. She considered going
back to see the surgeon but thought first to do the
exercises he gave her to reduce the swelling.

Over the next five months, Brenda continued
the exercises with the hope that she would wake
up and her breasts would once again be even. It
never happened. The size difference eventually
became so great that she needed to wear a bra
insert in her right cup. After admitting that
something was wrong Brenda went to see the
surgeon. She never expected what she was about
to find out.

As it turned out Brenda’s body had rejected
the cohesive gel implant. Through no fault of
the surgeon or the type of implant, Brenda’s
body was refusing what her mind and heart so
desperately wanted.

“It wasn’t the surgeon or the implant,”
Brenda told Fashion Weekly. “My body just
didn’t want to handle it. Luckily I was able to go
back and get it fixed.”

Unfortunately, when it comes to any surgery
there is no guarantee. Cases like Brenda’s happen
all of the time and luckily they can usually be
corrected. One celebrity who was faced with the
unfavourable consequences of plastic surgery was
Tara Reid. After consulting a plastic surgeon
in 2004, Reid was surprised to find her breasts
larger than she had imagined.
“[I] asked for big Bs [but instead] he gave me Cs,

and I didn’t want them,” Reid shared in an
interview with US Weekly.

After the surgery Reid noticed that her
nipples were slightly deformed but it wasn’t long
until the botched breast augmentation got much
worse.

“After six months of ‘it’s going to get better,’
it started to get worse and worse. I never thought
I would have nipples that looked like this,” Reid
told the magazine.

Why is it that with cases like Reid’s strewn

we often overlook. Top coat leaves the nails
looking shiny and professionally done and helps
the coat last up to a week as long as you apply a
fresh top coat daily.
